Varya Medunitsyna
I am an artist and set designer from Moscow, born in 2002.

Interested in posthumanism and anthropology, I am exploring the infinite combinations that precede the complete fusion of all living organisms into a single stream of vital energy. My focus is the pursuit of the values that underpin our coexistence with others. My job, as a human being, is helping materials take the shape they desire in the moment. Therefore I create my works like i write my love letters.

The curtains, while being the entry point, represent the organic through the artificial.  The fantasy of the fusion of two substances transforms reality and makes 
us think about where we belong.

The artificial imitates the real, playing hide and seek: "Touch me and you'll recognize me." To understand whether what you are looking at is alive or inanimate, 
you must examine it by touch.

The blanket with the texture of tree bark is an attempt to reproduce the organic through craft, an active step towards the dialog. Human beings approach the plant in the way they can: through contexts.

"I TAKE OFF MY SOCKS AND GO INTO THE ICY RIVER, LOOKING FOR THE MOUTH. I INHALE THE SMELL OF THE LEAF, CLASP ITS SURFACE WITH MY PALMS AND IT'S ALMOST LIKE I'M TRYING TO LISTEN WITH MY ARMS."

At the end of the journey, only the truly alive will remain present, while attempts to possess it will be as weightless as streams of light.

The project was implemented within the framework of the event "Archive. Part 2" organized 
by the Committee of Involved Observation and based on the study of the A.S. Golubkina Museum closed 
for reconstruction.


Several years of reconstruction of the museum preserved not only the work processes and their visible results, but also the construction of a full life of the builders working on the site. Their personal experience of life in the building is confined to a strict time frame, beyond which all evidence disappears and remains unrecorded.

My research consisted of communicating with the builders and searching for artifacts that testify to the transformation of the building's interior space, namely the emergence of non-building and non-museum contexts. The result of the research is an archive of authentic but unrecorded history. The project included a workshop on communication with neighbors and the effect of invisibility.
